House Votes to Extend Tax Cuts for Richest 2%

House Votes to Extend Tax Cuts for Richest 2%

Statement by NPA’s George Goehl:

House chose to enrich the rich at the expense of working Americans.

Chicago – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to extend the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2%. The following is a statement from George Goehl, executive director of National People’s Action:

“Today’s vote makes it abundantly clear that some of our elected officials will go to any lengths to protect the interests of the wealthiest, even when weighed against the economic well-being of 98% of Americans.

“Fact is that the wealthiest Americans have failed to pay their fair share for too long, leaving it to America’s families and small business owners to bear a heavier burden. Fact is that these tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans have not produced jobs or helped in any way to elevate working Americans, who continue to deal with high unemployment and high foreclosure rates.

“Extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans will mean diminished funding for our children’s education, curtailed healthcare for our elderly, inadequate housing for our families and less investment in our crumbling roads. It’s something they don’t need, and we can’t afford.”
